Mitre
PROThe saw setting for any angle: a flat frame, a kink in a slope, or tilted and turned at once.
What it is for
You know the angle of your structure, the app tells you how to set the saw. Including the tricky cases: a stair rail running onto a landing, or a rail that turns the corner on a stair.
Where to find it
Calculator → Mitre. On screen it is called Cutting angles. From the calculation list you get there with "Calculate in Cutting angles".
Step by step
Pick the section
Tap SECTION and pick from the library. Without a section, enter the size under "More settings".
Say what you are making
Under WHAT ARE YOU MAKING? choose: frame or corner flat on the bench, kink in a slope, or tilted and turned at once.
Give the angle
Type the angle of the structure, or measure two distances (an offset over a length) if you have no protractor at hand.
Read the saw setting
The app shows the cutting angle per piece and how to turn the saw. For tilted and turned you get two settings: the mitre (swivel) and the bevel (tilt the blade).
Put it on the calculation list
"Apply to this line" sends the angles to the line in the calculation list, so they also appear on the cutting plan and the cut list.
Worked example: Three angles
Tube 40 × 40 as an example. The allowance is what you add to the length when you measure to the long point.
| Situation | Input | Saw setting |
|---|---|---|
| Square frame | 90° | 45° per piece, + 40 mm |
| 120° frame | 120° | 30° per piece, + 23.1 mm |
| Hip rafter | 90° + slope 35° | mitre 50.7°, bevel 23.9° |
How the app calculates
- Flat frame: cutting angle per piece = (180° − angle of the structure) / 2.
- Long-point allowance = section size × tan(cutting angle): 40 × tan 30° = 23.1 mm.
- Tilted and turned: the cut lies in the plane of symmetry of the two bars; the app derives the mitre and the bevel from it.
Tips for the best result
- One piece can stay square: split the angle differently under "More settings". It cuts faster, the joint looks less tidy.
- Above 60° the turntable of most chop saws runs out. Mark the line and cut or grind it by hand.
- Measuring without a protractor: along the straight run, and square off it to the other part.
Questions
What is the difference between "kink in a slope" and "tilted and turned"?
With a kink everything stays in one vertical plane, like a rail going from the stair onto the landing. Tilted and turned is when the bar also makes an angle in plan view, like a hip rafter.
