Sections

Sizes, weight and properties of every section, in steel, stainless, aluminium, copper and brass.

What it is for

Look up what a section weighs and what it looks like: depth, width, web and flange thickness, weight per metre and the key section values. From there one button puts the section on your calculation list.

Where to find it

The Sections tab at the bottom. Pick a family (beams, channels, angles, tubes and pipes, bar and plate, window and door) or search right away.

Step by step

  1. Find the section

Type the series or the size in the search field, for example "HEA 200" or "60 × 4". You can also browse by family.

  2. Pick the size

Tap the size. You see the key dimensions large at the top, the section in 3D to turn around, and the material with grades and standard.

  3. Read the properties

Under "Properties (nominal)" you find the weight, the area A and, where available, the moment of inertia and section modulus. "How this was calculated" shows how the weight follows from the dimensions.

  4. Put it on the calculation list

Tap "Add to calculation list". Every tap adds a line; you fill in length and quantity in the calculation list.

  5. Keep your regular sections

Mark sections you use often as a favourite, so you find them quickly.

Worked example: HEA 200

A European wide flange beam from the light series (EN 10365), as the app shows it.

PropertyValue
h190 mm
b200 mm
tw / tf6.5 / 10 mm
Area A53.8 cm²
Weight42.3 kg/m
How the app calculates
  • Area = two flanges + the web + the four root radii: 2 × 200 × 10 + (190 − 2 × 10) × 6.5 + (4 − π) × 18² ≈ 5383 mm².
  • Weight = area × density: 5383 mm² × 7850 kg/m³ ≈ 42.3 kg per metre.

Tips for the best result

  • Working in stainless, aluminium, copper or brass? Pick the tile for that material: the app then uses the right density (for example stainless 7900, aluminium 2700 kg/m³).
  • In the United States the list also has W, S, HP, C and MC shapes, per AISC and ASTM A6.
  • The values are indicative and calculated from the nominal dimensions. For a design calculation, check with your supplier or the standard.

Questions

Why is the weight sometimes a fraction off from my steel table?

The app calculates from the nominal dimensions at 7850 kg/m³. Tables sometimes round differently. The working shows exactly how the number comes about.

Can I use a different density?

Yes, in Settings. Every weight in the app scales with it.
